more environmentalism

on September 8, 2005

For those who were interested by the article yesterday, here’s a website you might find interesting if you don’t already know it:

The Ecologist is published in the UK but not all the newsagents sell it – Smiths do but not everywhere it seems. We buy it whenever we’re over in the UK. It is quite biased and often contradicts itself (for example, sometimes you’ll get one article praising the EU for doing something good for the environment and the next article is going on about how the EU is evil and the result of globalisation) but nonetheless it’s a very interesting read and it often has good features about buying from farmers’ markets and re-usable nappies (those were just two that struck me recently).

However – on the website you can register to get free access to the archive, so if you don’t fancy paying for this month’s edition you can still see if there was anything of interest in past editions. (I only just discovered this!)

That’s my reading matter sorted for a while. 🙂

ETA: I was reading something on someone’s journal – can’t remember where – about the welfare state being a cause of problems for the States. Norway is a welfare state, with virtually no unemployment or desperately poor people, and it’s just come top of the UN prosperity list for the fifth year in a row. Here’s why:

… I want to live in Norway! It sounds even better than Switzerland (which is not a welfare state at all)!
